WATER SUPPLY PROJECT FOR TUMAINI ORPHANED CHILDREN'S HOME

SUPPORTED BY ROTARY CLUB OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE, DISTRICT 9200

Tumaini Children’s home was conceived by a Christian group primarily to strive and relieve the suffering of some of the children fathered and often times abandoned by migrant workers of Kakira Sugar Works. The mothers of such children often fall victim to the aids scourge living orphans with no secure home and livelihood. Further, a good number of those with both parents are also challenged as their parents have lost their jobs especially contract workers who do not want to go back to their villages or forced to retire early etc. The driving force behind the formation of Tumaini was the urge to provide a secure home, livelihood and education for the orphaned children of Polota slums. Tumaini now has a permanent home (see picture) that accommodates over 80 orphans and former destitute children (boys and girls). The home (yet to receive final finishing touches and furniture) was built through various donations. Beds and beddings for 60 children were purchased through funding by a Rotary International Matching Grant. The Rotary Club of the Source of the Nile hosted the transactions of the Grant in Uganda. The home supports non resident students as well through payment of school fees and supply of essential scholastic materials.

A key need at Tumaini Children’s home at the moment is steady supply of water especially clean potable water. This need is reflected in the frequency of water borne diseases suffered by some of the residents. Management of National Water and Sewerage Corporation is willing to connect the children’s home to their line in the neighborhood if they can provide the plumbing, interim water storage tank and redistribution network to strategic taping locations at the orphanage compound. This project seeks funding to the tune of US $6,000 to take advantage of this provision.
